Film nights with a programmer

Great films. Good company. A new way to see both.

Projector is a film companion led by programmers. A programmer picks a film, sets a showtime, and hosts the room. You watch on your own TV, on whatever service you already pay for, while their notes arrive in sync on a second screen alongside live chat.

How a night works

Watch films with the people who love them.

A programmer picks a film

A critic, a video essayist or a repertory programmer picks a film, sets a showtime, and writes notes pinned to moments in the runtime.

You reserve a seat

You reserve a seat on the web and attend in the app. One seat costs $2.99.

You watch on your own TV

At showtime you press play on your own copy of the film, on whatever service you already pay for, and the room starts with you.

During the screening

Like DVD commentary, but live and shared.

The film plays on your TV. Your phone carries everything else: the programmer’s notes, the host’s cues and a room full of people watching the same scene.

Notes that land on the moment

Before the night, the programmer pins Liner Notes to moments in the runtime. Each one reaches your phone as that scene plays.

A host who runs the night

The programmer starts the film, pauses it and calls intermissions for everyone at once.

A room that talks back

Live chat runs beside the notes, and the programmer can put a poll to the room.

Your phone as the remote

Pair the app with your TV and it works like a universal remote. When the host pauses, your TV pauses.

Step away without losing your place

Take a break or sit through an ad. Projector tracks how far behind the room you are, so notes and chat reach you at your own point in the film.

Those limestone towers are real. Much of the island was shot in Vietnam.

Wait, that’s not a set? I assumed all of it was digital.

Dev Ramaswamy Programmer 00:24:12

Real rock. Ninh Bình and Hạ Long Bay. The digital part is the ape.

Theo K. 00:22:40

Paused for snacks and the notes waited for me. Very civilised.

What’s on

Any film you can stream.

New releases, art house and the classics, on the service you already pay for. If you can stream it, a programmer can host it. Projector never plays the film itself.
